Frankfort Independent Schools Board of Education Approves the Seal of Biliteracy
[Frankfort, KY] – The Frankfort Independent Schools Board of Education proudly announces the approval of the Seal of Biliteracy program, a significant milestone in fostering language proficiency and celebrating cultural diversity within our school district.
At a recent board meeting on November 13, 2023, the Board of Education unanimously voted to implement the Seal of Biliteracy, recognizing the importance of language proficiency in an increasingly interconnected global society. This initiative is a testament to the district's commitment to providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for success in an ever-evolving world.
The Frankfort Independent Schools Board of Education was able to hear from two Frankfort High School students, Addison Baker and Roukiya Mahamoud. Both students spoke about how the Seal of Biliteracy would benefit them upon graduation from Frankfort High School. Both students are students of language and would like to use those languages in their chosen career fields.
The Seal of Biliteracy is a nationally recognized award that acknowledges students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, listening, and writing in one or more languages. By achieving this prestigious seal, students showcase their linguistic talents and gain a competitive edge in an increasingly diverse job market.
Superintendent Sheri Satterly expressed enthusiasm for adopting the Seal of Biliteracy, stating, "We are excited to provide our students with the opportunity to showcase their language skills and cultural competencies. The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes their achievements and reinforces our value on diversity and global awareness within our educational community." FIS board of education chairperson stated, “I think this is a wonderful opportunity for our students…this isn’t an action item tonight, but I believe we could go ahead and vote on this for our students.”
The Seal of Biliteracy will be available to eligible students starting in the 2023-24 school year. Students must meet specific language proficiency standards and commit to cross-cultural understanding to qualify. The district will work closely with language educators to implement the program effectively and provide resources to support students in their language learning journey.
